- NEW VIDEO SHOWS THE FUN OF USING PUBLIC TRANSIT FOR YOUR WEEKEND GETAWAY, September 2011
Do you enjoy getting out into nature but dread the weekend traffic? New tools make it easy for you to find alternative ways to get out into nature using pubic transit. We took our camera on the trail with the team from
Bay Area Open Space Council
who designed transitandtrails.org
which maps out nearly all the trail heads in the Bay Area. The site then links up to online resouces for mapping your trip. In the Bay Area, you can map trips using
511.org
(similar trip planning tools exist for many large cities in the US and elsewhere) or by using
Google Maps.
Currently the most comprehensive source of local transit information is 511.org. Check out the
video
and get inspired to leave your car behind on your next weekend hike or bike ride. (read more...)
- MIND THE GAP COMPLETES INITIAL FILMING IN CHINA, July 2011
We are just back from Beijing where we filmed the impact of the expanding number of cars on once bicycle dominiated roads in the the capital of the former Bicycle Kingdom. With the growth of the city limites and two fiver-year plans focused on the car as an engine of growth, the number of commutes by bike has dropped from 40% in the 19080s and 90s down to 17-18% today. That is a big decline, but to put this in perspective, commutes by bike make up only 6.4% of commutes in Portalnd and only 1% in San Francisco. In Beijing we were able to follow bikers as well as commuters taking various forms of public and private transportation. (read more...)
